(A guide to doing your part in addressing the UN SGD 12th Principle: Responsible Consumption and Production).

When it comes to our food, water, energy and consumables, many of us are very wasteful. The statistics are quite alarming when it comes to showcasing just how much we are wasting.

Each year, an estimated one-third of all food produced – equivalent to 1.3 billion tonnes worth around $1 trillion – ends up rotting in the bins of consumers and retailers or spoiling due to poor transportation and harvesting practices. Yet there are so many people going without food or starving 😦

An estimate states that if the global population reaches 9.6 billion by 2050, we would need the equivalent of almost three planet Earths to provide the natural resources necessary to sustain our current lifestyles.

Is this sustainable? Definitely not!

To help tackle the global climate crisis we are facing, the United Nations developed their Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), which are 17 principles that are big goals they've set for us all to achieve by 2030. But to achieve this, it requires us ALL to do our part.

One of those goals: Sustainable Development Goal #12: Responsible Consumption and Production, is about doing more and better with less. It is also about ensuring resource efficiency, promoting sustainable lifestyles and ensuring that economic growth doesn't occur at the expense of the environment.

Here are our top 10 tips on how you can do your part towards meeting this collective goal:

1: Say no to plastic

Take your refillable water bottle, bring your own bags, eat in rather than take away, use a keep cup every day, and clean with vinegar, not chemicals. Recycle and reuse the plastic you do consume.

2: Become a conscious consumer.

Avoid the fast fashion brands that do not produce their clothes ethically (exploitation) and don't use sustainably milled or organically grown fabrics (pollution).

3: Walk or Bike!

Reduce your carbon emissions by walking to the shops, taking public transport to work or bike ride to the gym!

4. Be Water Savvy

Capture the water from your shower to use in your garden. Don't leave the taps running. Take shorter showers and help conserve this precious resource.

5: Invest Ethically

Switch to banks, superannuation funds, savings products or applications and renewable energy providers who invest your money responsibly & ethically and enable you to get a return whilst doing good for the environment.

6: Switch off Appliances / Save Electricity

Become more conscious of your energy usage and turn off lights and appliances when not in use. Limit your use of air conditioning.

7: Opt for Quality over Quantity

Shop for Quality! Well-made quality products retain their value for a long time. You can donate them for someone else to love when the time comes to pass them on.

8: Get into a Recycle / Reuse Mindset

Donate to and buy from charity shops. These shops house a myriad of old-world bargains and treasures, they prevent lots of items from going to landfill, and the proceeds help others less fortunate than ourselves.

9: Educate yourself

Follow inspirational people on social media who foster critical thinking and help create awareness around matters impacting people and the environment. The more informed we are, the more we can do to fix this situation.

10: Be Mindful

Once upon a time, there were no plastic bags at the supermarket, and no Uber Eats. We couldn't shop on demand or use multiple devices all at once. Often we use the excuse that we are too busy when in fact, we are just distracted and not paying attention, lacking planning or not being proactive. Being more mindful of our consumption footprint will benefit us financially and support our planet environmentally.

Imagine if we all did our part towards looking after our environment and supporting our planet's and people's future wellbeing. What a difference that could make!
