In collaboration with our partner Elevate Super

The United Nations (UN) 2030 Agenda provided a framework of Sustainable Development Goals that we have less than eight years to achieve.

These 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) are ambitious but necessary if we are to tackle the issues that we and the planet face.

Each goal has measurable targets. Each goal is interlinked with other SGD goals to “develop mutually reinforcing policies so that policies work together to achieve national goals and objectives while avoiding or minimising negative impacts in other policy areas.”

In other words, working towards any SDG must consider the implications and impact it has on other SDGs.

From a systems thinking approach, it recognises that each SDG is part of one bigger picture designed to help achieve long-lasting, sustainable development outcomes.

For example:

SDG1 + SDG7

(No Poverty) + (Affordable & Clean Energy)

Poverty eradication (SDG1) involves ensuring those living in poverty (almost half the world population) gain access to affordable, reliable and modern energy services.

However, decarbonising energy systems by promoting renewables and increasing energy efficiency could cause price shocks and prevent universal access to modern energy supplies.

Because some of the poorest parts of the world have some of the highest renewable energy potentials, using this potential could help reduce poverty. On the other hand, pursuing one goal or target may conflict with the achievement of others.

For example, an increase in agricultural production to help end hunger (SDG2: Zero Hunger) can increase water use for irrigation, which may compete with the water demand for universal access to drinking water (SDG6: Clean Water & Sanitation).

SDG1 + SDG14

(No Poverty) + (Life Below Water)

Healthy, productive and resilient oceans and coasts are critical to poverty alleviation, environmentally sustainable economic growth, and human well-being, especially in coastal communities.

But despite the various co-benefits for building resilient communities, achieving SDG 14: Life Below Water could limit access to the resources and ecosystem services necessary to alleviate poverty.

As you can see, the SDGs and their associated targets form a complicated network of interlinkages through the connections among and between each other.

This means that the world has a lot of work to do over the next eight years if we’re to achieve these goals designed to support the future of people and the Planet.
