Blossom

Author

Name: Dirk Hoare
Occupation: Customer Success at Blossom!
Location: Sydney

Do you have a saving or investing mindset? Describe your style in one sentence.
A mixture of both mindsets, embrace the concept of long-term compound interest with investments and savings!

Do you invest actively? Why or why not? If so, what is your approach in a nutshell? What level of risk are you comfortable with?
I mainly invest in ETFs and occasionally invest in individual shares, as well as having savings in Blossom. I don't like to put all my eggs in one basket and prefer to diversify.

What are some of the money lessons/mistakes you have learned so far? Any milestones/successes you would like to share?

Biggest mistake I made was following investment advice from a person on Wallstreet bets (a reddit page). It's safe to say that I lost most of my investment after that.

A recent milestone however, is automating a recurring payment to my Blossom account which helps me save to buy plane tickets to see my family every year! Works really well when you plan to travel frequently.

What is one of your short-term money goals?
Saving up for a new surfboard!

What are you most likely to splurge on?
New surfboards and unnecessary surf gear. I'm a sucker for an up-sell when I see an ad.

Any resources that have helped you with your money - i.e., books, apps, websites, podcasts?
Tony Robbins' book, "Money, master the game" helped me out, definitely would recommend! Or if you're just starting out, you can't go wrong with The Barefoot Investor.

Any investments outside of Blossom?
Outside of Blossom I mainly invest in a mixture of ETFs, Ethical, Tech, ASX, S&P 500 and European ETFs. I also just got started with commodities.

Who is your biggest money role model?
My biggest role model is Tony Robbins, his book is what got me started with investing, especially the emphasis on, "knowing the rules before you get in the game". If it weren't for his book, I would not be where I am today!

What’s the best piece of financial advice you’ve been given? Or one piece of financial advice you’d give your younger self?
"Investing as a young person isn't about maximising your returns, it's about becoming more financially literate in order to be confident in the financial decisions you make".

Don't get too stressed about investing and read, read read! Only invest in things you understand.
